7 Must Know Steps to Protecting Yourself from Ransomware

First Step - Update the latest Windows software version by Microsoft


In order to protect user from malware ransomware Microsoft recently released the latest version of Window 7, Window 8 to immediately update the file. Update software or system will help reduce the risk of ransomware attack.

Second Step - Stop sharing folder or drive

Microsoft publish a post about disabling folder sharing by using the window interface.

1. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Finally the system will remind user that computer will restart. After computer has restarted, the system will stop sharing files.

Third Step - Installed Antivirus


Majority of antivirus is free and users need to install antivirus to prevent virus or malware attack. User also must make sure their antivirus software is updated and maintain a strong firewall. When the virus try to attack the system, the antivirus will detect it and remind the user. Antivirus can block suspicious installation and look for malware in computers. Before users are downloading files, antivirus will help to detect whether the file contain malicious virus or malware.

Fourth Step - Backup files

Have a habit of file backups daily. Data backup on a regular basis is a better way to protect yourself from ransomware. The user should backup files on the cloud and external hard drives, if possible, daily or at least weekly.

Fifth Step- Prevention better than cure

Users should be aware of launching suspicious messages, attachment, questionable apps and program, links and spam emails. Do not click on malicious advertisement and pictures. Users should beware of opening files with extensions ending with ”.exe”, “vbs” or ”zip”. User should reconfirm message origin and make sure images are protected from virus attack because some hackers can inject malware into images and pictures as well.

Sixth Step - Using Other Operating System


Majority of the victims of ransomware attack are Windows Operating System users. Thus, virus are spread through such systems. On the other hand, Ubuntu , Mac OS X and other unix-based operating system will help prevent or avoid such attacks. Linux systems are less likely to be hacked compared with Microsoft-based OSes.
